Medicare

Psychology services are supported by medicare and private health insurers

In November 2006, the Australian Government introduced the Better Access to Mental Health Care Initiative which allows patients in need of mental health services to access these services and obtain a Medicare rebate. More recently, in part as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Medicare has included Telehealth as a rebateable service.
Many private health insurers also offer rebates and benefits for psychology services.

To see if you are eligible to receive a Medicare rebate, you need to see your GP and discuss if you are eligible for a mental health care plan.
Your GP will ask you a series of questions to determine the best course of treatment for you and if appropriate make a referral to a psychologist for you.

If you do have private health insurance, you will need to check with your insurer what type of cover you have and what benefits and rebates you are eligible for.

At The Red Couch Counselling and Psychology Clinic, we like to make things as simple, convenient and easy for you as we can. Therefore, when you come in to see us with a Medicare referral, we can submit your Medicare rebate for you electronically at the time you settle your account with us. No filling in forms, no trips to Medicare, no waiting in line...

Medicare will deposit your rebate straight into your nominated bank account. This should arrive in your nominated bank account within 24 hours, or the next business day.

For further information, please speak with your GP or private health insurer.
